Default PvE monk help

Still pretty new to the game and decided to try a monk.
I play 99% by myself and run around w/ heroes and henchman almost always.

Would I be better off with a protection monk or a healing monk?

Does anyone have any good builds (with or without elite skills) that I could try?

Run healing. Grab a hero monk with Unyielding Aura, bring with Arcane Mimicry and bring Healer's boon. Because UA + HB = ~2.5x heals. You can nearly heal for 200hp with heal party using that setup. The rest is up to you.

EDIT :
As for AC's builds, I was going to comment on them, but then I realized I wouldn't exactly be partying with either of you so why the heck should I care xD

Most monks in PvE like [[Healer's Boon], [[Word of Healing], or [[Unyielding Aura].

1. [build prof=monk/e healin=12+1+2 protec=6+1 divine=11+1][Dwayna's Kiss][Ethereal Light][Dismiss Condition][Shield of Absorption][Heal Party][Glyph of Lesser Energy][Healer's Boon][Resurrection Chant][/build]

2. [build prof=mo/e div=12+1+1 pro=12+1][divine healing][heavens delight][aegis][protective spirit][dismiss condition][Shield of Absorption][gole][unyielding aura][/build]

3. [build prof=Mo/Any healing=12+1+2 prot=9+1 divine=9+1][word of healing][dwayna's kiss][dismiss condition][Signet of Rejuvenation][shield of absorption][protective spirit][cure hex][rebirth][/build]

Default Some suggestions..

I would definitely run a protection build, and let the hero run a healing build. Imo heroes just can’t use protection builds effectively.

Effective protection builds can vary a lot. But I will give you some safe suggestions for general PvE NM.

Protective Spirit
Shield of Absorption
Dismiss Condition
Aegis
Rebirth
[E] Shield of Deflection (or)
Divert Hexes
Zealous Benediction
Glyph of lesser Energy (or some other E-management skill)
Optional skill

Have fun exploring. Monk-ing imo is the most challenging profession in GW, both in PvE and PvP. Don’t feel locked into strict builds. But it is important to consider the skills of the “other” healer in your group to ensure all the angles are covered.

agreed. heroes suck at protting. i would just use a hybrid build though something like

patient spirit
dismiss condition
guardian
woh
cure hex
signet of rejuv.
prot spirit/spirit bond
and since its pve if you can i would grab the pve skill selfless spirit. if not then glyph of lesser

While I totally agree monk heroes can't run prot very well, there is one question: Why would you even want to use a monk hero?

And for the build suggestion. I would start with one of the WoH hybrids.

Heroes, just cant prot. It's as simple as that. They think every prot skill is a heal and so they will prot people that are hurt, but not under attack.

I personally enjoying protting very much. And would probably suggest something along the lines that Cerick posted. However, hybrids are very effective as well and you should probably look into that.

In my opinion, if you're running a 2 monk backline, PvE or PvP =p, 1 full prot and 1 hybrid would be best. Simply because if you can prevent the damage, i.e. prots, then you wont need the heals.(However, in PvE the full prot can easily be replaced with an imbagon or something of the sort.)

Heroes don't prot well because they can't preact. They can only react. That's why they seam better with heals than prots.

Run prot, let heroes heal.

Once you get accustomed to protting, switch roles with heroes. Micromanage their PS and Aegis while healing and calling targets.

"Would I be better off with a protection monk or a healing monk?"

Well, we can debate for ages about that question.
Basic: preventing red bars from going down is superior to filling them. However, this is not always possible and not always the most efficient way. Find what's the most efficient mix for each area/mission between keeping up and filling and you have the best bar.

I guess you could run the best of both worlds and use protection with word of healing as the only healing skill.

IMO pure prot is overdoing it, so as suggested above, run WoH with Aegis, dismiss conditions, prot spirit, shield of absorption, patient spirit, remove hex OR cure hex, dwayna's kiss, hard rez(Rez Chant or Rebirth)
Oops failure that was 9 skills, I guess you can pick and choose ;P
Oh yeah, PvE only monk skills are total crap compared to many other professions...ie Paragon, Dervish, Sin, even ele...

If you're running Gift of Health on a ZB bar wouldn't it be highly more efficient to just run a WoH with Patient / Dwayna's...?

Drop all the healing and put back into divine favors. Then drop [[gift of health] for [[dismiss condition] and it'll work the same way. You don't need [[guardian] when you have [[aegis] so I would drop it for a [[holy veil] since you don't have any hex removal yet.

Rebirth on PvP build better use for the slot for hex removal like cure as mentioned or holy viel. This is for PvE anyway so no problem with it on and yes I would use WoH.

This is what I run most of the time in pve:

[build name="pve" prof=Mo/E heal=10+1 prot=12+1+1 divine=8+1][reversal of fortune][word of healing][shield of absorption][cure hex][dismiss condition][spirit bond][aegis][glyph of lesser energy][/build]
It's rather a protection-build but there aren't any other useful elites so I just run WoH.....
Oh and I have a copy of [[prot spirit] on one hero in case SB won't cut it.

Running a ZB bar means you get 14 prot, which makes rebirth only disable for 3 seconds!
